WOMEN AND DEVISING

This informal round-table discussion asks whether and how gender might influence contemporary devising process and practice.   Our discussions will explore the experience of professional women devisers working in a range of contexts and roles:

 

Contributors

·         Kirsty Housley is a writer, director and dramaturg who has worked with a wide range of companies and practitioners. She is currently an Associate Director with Complicite and, in her capacity as a staff director at the National Theatre, worked with Emma Rice on Kneehigh’s A Matter of Life and Death.

·         Imogen Knight is a choreographer and movement Director whose recent work includes The Wicker Man and The Missing with The National Theatre of Scotland, Company with the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield and Frantic Assembly’s Our Song. She is currently working on Filumena at the Almeida Theatre.

·         Anna-Helena Mclean leads Moon Fool, ‘a platform for international theatre-makers to exchange skills and develop practice’, and is currently developing a solo version of Moon Fool’s production Ill Met By Moonlight. She also worked for 7 years with Gardzienice Theatre Association in Gardzienice near Lublin, Poland.

·         Arti Prashar is Artistic Director of Spare Tyre, a company which has for 30 years been ‘creating theatre with voiceless communities’ and developing new models of participatory work. Spare Tyre’s current production is Picture Me at the New Diorama Theatre, a piece ‘celebrating the voices of women’.

·         Naomi Said is a practitioner and performance who is currently Company Movement Practitioner at the RSC, working with Struan Leslie on his new devised piece, Song of Songs (and on Comedy of Errors with Amir Nizar Zuabi). As well as creating her own solo devising and performance work with Theatre Absolute, she has worked with Frantic Assembly on numerous projects assisting Liam Steel and with a range of other companies.
