water[war]s is a performance project initiated by Jill Greenhalgh
(artistic director of the Magdalena
Project), Michael Brookes (installation artist) and their
daughters, Jessie and Meg.
It is a performance in process
across time and land. Over a period of several years, small invited
groups of young women from diverse theatre cultures will collaborate
with this family to create a series of public manifestations in
their home cities.
The idea emerged at the Br/leeding Ground
Project in Cardiff, October 1999 - an event which brought artists
together to confront and explore the efficacy of art in a time of
political conflict.
The working title and choice of theme are synonymous, and arose
from a question, and an answer, that haunts the director:
"... and over what will be the wars of the next millenium?
Not of land, nor of oil, nor of gold, but of water."
Jill Greenhalgh is invited to work with
groups of performers for a week at a time in various international
theatre contexts. The host organisation, through whatever selection
process is appropriate to their individual context, selects the
performers.
The short working period with each group
will focus on developing a single detailed image sequence in relation
to the specific thematic of water[war]s as interpreted by
the individual performer.
The ideas and propositions of the young
performers in response to these issues will have a strong influence
on the development of the work. At a given and appropriate time,
there will be a convergence that results in a full-scale performance
involving all the different groups and their specific results. |
